Why The Camels?
In 2001 P3 supported a charity called Farm Africa in Tanzania and Kenya. The project was aptly named the ‘Camel Project’ and was providing camels to communities and schools along with husbandry support and teachers as well.
The camels helped in two ways:
- The camels provide milk to the children even in a drought and the schools can sell spare milk to buy resources for the children's learning.
- The children learn the skills to look after the camels which helps them become better farmers in the future.
The camels are specially bred to be more resistant to drought and local conditions and a significant number of camels have been bought and bred. In addition local people have been trained to support the schools and teach the children the husbandry skill they need to look after their camels.
The project came to an end in 2005. IN early 2006 P3 began to support our other partner charity, Ripple Africa.
P3 are proud to support RIPPLE Africa, a charity working in Malawi.
Ripple Africa’s mission is:
- to improve the standard of education and healthcare
- to preserve and sustainably develop the environment
- to create opportunities for the local community around Mwaya on the
Geoff and Liz Furber created the charity in 2003 when they bought a property on the shores of Lake Malawi at Mwaya Beach. The previous owner, Kristin, had operated the property as a budget tourist lodge and had latterly decided to help the local community by recruiting volunteer teaching assistants and health care assistants for the primary school and nearby health centre. Geoff and Liz decided to continue with the volunteer programme and expand it.
The main aim was to raise funds to provide educational support to enable the local children to realise their potential. Alie, one of the volunteers, came up with the name RIPPLE — and the charity was born. RIPPLE is an acronym for Recognising Individual Potential & Promoting Local Education and captures the essence of the project. However, the project has grown and developed over the two years since its inception and now encompasses all aspects of the lives of the members of the community, i.e. education, healthcare and Environment.
